About our Rescue Service:
Corolla Ocean Rescue (COR),
a division of Corolla Fire and Rescue Squad, provides a minimum of 25
lifeguards during the summer months and peak visitor season. These
lifeguards are either assigned to fixed tower locations or patrol the
oceanfront on ATVs. The lifesaving operation covers about twenty-two
miles of beach, serving over 1.2 million visitors per season. The
mission of this lifesaving organization is to provide the safest beach
environment possible. Corolla Ocean Rescue personnel focus on prevention
of accidents through education of and interaction with the general
public.
Corolla is located on the northern
most part of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is bordered by the
Currituck Sound on the west and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. The area
is surrounded by wildlife, known mostly for its wild horses and water
fowl. Also, because it sits just north of the Graveyard of the Atlantic
(Cape Hatteras) this is an area rich in history and tradition.
The Corolla Ocean Rescue Season begins
Memorial Day weekend and continues through Labor Day weekend. The
operation consists of sixteen stationary lifeguard stands, nine roving
ATV patrols, and three QRVs (Quick Response Vehicles) each manned by a
certified NC EMT. Corolla Ocean Rescue is also responsible for
responding to emergencies in the Currituck Sound.
